The Interdisciplinary Center for Research on Arts, Politics, Memory and Society (PolArt)

Created in 2019 at the University of Bucharest, PolArt supports, promotes and conducts interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research on the relationship between the arts, politics, memory and society in different regions of the world. At the encounter of political science, sociology, history of ideas, art history, and cultural anthropology, this research center welcomes projects of research that deal with the representation of political power, as well as to the unsettling of political power by artistic representations.

Some of the research topics it supports include:

  • comparative cultural politics during democracies and autocracies
  • cultural exchange during the Cold War and afterwards
  • a focus on different regions of the World: Latin America, Africa, Asian countries, as well as on Europe and North America.
  • memory studies (in particular cultural memory, the politics of memory, artistic memorialization)
  • postcommunism and culture
  • transitional justice and artistic representations of traumatic pasts
  • cultural expressions of dictatorships and during dictatorships
  • visual arts, street/urban art, music, cinema, theater, dance and their role in politics
  • urban studies – the city and its new dynamics; art in the public space; street art, graffiti and urban interventions.
  • the aesthetics of politics (political campaigns, posters, caricatures)

Subfields of research: cultural policies, regional studies (Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe, North America), the relationship between art and politics, the study of memory, postcolonial studies.
